The main character briefly enters East Berlin on the request of his parents, only to be interogated by the DDR officials and deported quickly back to West Berlin. He has never been there before in the 28 years that the Wall has stood and shows no interest in going. The world around the characters completely passes them by, whilst they sit and drink, so as to avoid having to confront their reality.
On the night of the opening of the Berlin Wall, the main character is sitting in a bar with other disenchanted members of society. He asks when his life all started to go wrong, ' it's like the fall of the Roman Empire' he muses, 'no one knew it was happening until it had happened'. Once news reaches them that the Wall has opened, the barman slowly turns on the televison without much interest, they calmly watch the celebrations, only after their drinks are finished do they venture out on to the streets to see the spectacle for themelves. He wakes his friend 'Wake up Rudi, the Wall is open', 'What does that mean?', ' I have no idea'.
Once confronted with the siginificance of the event that he finds himself a part of, he decides to search for a new life. The Wall kept the West fenced in, now that the Wall is open, he can now venture forward into the world and see what it has to offer.
